Japan loan boosts Sihanoukville port expansion

Cambodia got a loan from Japan for 41,388,000,000 yen ($306 million) to develop a new container port at the Sihanoukville Port. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and his Japanese counterpart Hayashi Yoshimasa exchanged remarks and associated paperwork on the loan extension during a function presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen. The new loan will assist Cambodia in expanding and modernizing Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, transforming it into a major deep-sea port. The loan agreement was signed by Hem Vanndy, secretary of state at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and Kamei Haruko, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Cambodia office. After three container terminal developments are completed, the port will be able to handle deadweight tonne containers.
